THE HAGUE (NL) [ENA] Museum Voorlinden presents, in collaboration with Musée national Picasso-Paris and Fondation Giacometti, the first exhibition in the Netherlands on the suprising bond between two of the greatest artists of the twentieth century: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966).

This special exhibition marks the fifth anniversary of museum Voorlinden. The exhibition Picasso-Giacometti reveals the little-known relationship between Picasso and Giacometti. The two groundbreaking artists appreciated each other’s work and developed a special bond, despite an age difference of twenty years. Museum Voorlinden shows the surprising similarities between the two artists and the way they inspired, challenged, and found their way within surrealism in the 1930s and realism after the Second World War. The exhibition was first introduced at the Musée National Picasso-Paris in 2016 (6 October 2016 – 5 February 2017), then travelled to the Fire Station in Doha, Qatar in 2017 (22 February – 21 May 2017).

Constantly evolving From their initial meeting in the early 1930s, Picasso and Giacometti never stopped exchanging ideas about art. They explored surrealism and had extensive dialogues after the war on the struggles of returning to realism. During this time, both artists were to transform their practice and explore questions about creation and its relation to reality, questions to which they responded with different formal solutions. The exhibition at Voorlinden features a chronological and thematic overview, exploring key aspects of the artistic production of these two groundbreaking artists, and the similarities in their creative journeys.
